Pāli pharasu

In Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, the Pali word pharasu refers to a “hatchet and an axe.” They also present the cognates of pharasu in other Indo-European languages. It includes paraśu in Sanskrit, πέλεκυς (pélekys) in Greek, and pharasu and parasu in Prakrit. It is an offshoot of the Tamil root akku through the transformation of akku > aṡ > paraṡú > pharasu.
