Pāli assa

In the Pali-English Dictionary, Davids and Stede assert that the Pali word assa2 means “corner or point.” It has cognates in other Indo-European languages with a similar meaning. For example, aśra, aśri meaning “corner, point” in Sanskrit, acer meaning “sharp” in Latin, and α῎κρος & ὀςύς (a῎kros & osýs) meaning “sharp” in Greek are analogous to Pali assa2 . This assa2 originates from Tamil akku through the transformation of akku > aṡ > áṡri > assa. The following words, related to Pali assa2 , also originate from Tamil .akku

caturassa, “four-cornered, quadrangular, regular.” catur-(r)aṁsa, “having four edges, four- edged.” catur-(r)assa, “four-cornered, quadrangular, regular.” catur-(r)assara, “with 4 sharp sides.” aṁsa (2), “point, corner, edge.” aṁsi, “a corner, edge.” aṭṭha-aṁsa, “with eight edges, octagonal, octahedral, implying perfect or divine symmetry, of a diamond.” cha-aṁsa and chaḷ- aṁsa, “six-cornered.”
