Sinhalese aksha
Clough’s Sinhala English Dictionary states that the Sinhalese word aksha refers to “a die for gambling.” It also means “contest, lawsuit, legal proceedings; an organ of sense, the eye; wheel of a carriage; a tree bearing a medicinal fruit, Terminalia bellirica; a kind of seed or small nut, Elaeocarpus, used by Hindus for rosaries, in which sense it chiefly occurs in composition; and a weight of sixteen Másha seeds.” The Sinhalese word aksha is an offshoot of Tamil akku through the transformation of akku > akshá > aksha. The following word, related to Sinhalese aksha, also originates from Tamil akku.
akshamálá, “rosary, string of beads, especially the seeds of the Elaeocarpus used by the Hindu mendicants;” “name of Arundhati (wife of Vaṣishṭha),” that signified her rosary garland.
